A monument to the victims of the Holocaust that had been erected only a few weeks ago in Rhodes was desecrated in early July, and according to eye witnesses was completely destroyed. It is not clear who was responsible for the act. The head of the local Jewish community said that the monument would be restored, but it may remain defiled as an educational lesson for the Greek community. In the course of the construction of the monument, a letter was received from Member of Parliament Kranzparis (a known antisemite and nationalist) in which he expressed his opposition to the construction of the monument.
