On 19th July 2002, anstisemitic thugs completely destroyed the headstones at the Jewish cemetery in Minsk. Several days previously, over 70 headstones were desecrated in the town of Borisov, east of Minsk. The police arrested a number of young vandals suspected of having carried out the acts. Desecration of cemeteries in Belarus has reached mass proportions recently. Jewish organizations are now preparing a letter to the President of Belarus, Lukashenko, in which they intend complaining, among other things, about the lack of action on the part of the local authorities, which they feel encourages this kind of activity.
