Germany – Memorial Ceremony Attended by Jews and Christians at the Synagogue in Nuremberg

Jewish and Christian leaders met in the city of Nurmberg to mark the destruction of the city’s Central Synagogue 64 years ago. The participants in the ceremony used the opportunity to speak out against antisemitism and in favor of support for Israel. “There are still brutal people who wish to defame Jews and foreigners”, said Arno Hamburger, the Head of the Jewish community in the city. He said that he was 15 years old when he saw the streets filled with people who applauded the destruction of the local synagogue on 10th August 1938. The order to destroy the synagogue had come from Julius Streicher, the publisher of the antisemitic news paper Der Sturmer.
