Egypt – Religious Ruling Forbidding Epithets Against Jews

Sheikh Sayed Tantawi, the Mufti of Egypt handed down a religious ruling forbidding the calling of Jews “monkeys” and “swine”. This new ruling was handed down following a report that the Egyptian Embassy in Washington had forwarded about protests by Congressmen, State Department officials and Jewish organizations, who were furious over a sermon that Tantawi had delivered a year previously in which he called the Jews “the enemies of Allah, monkeys and swine”.
