Britain – Desecration of a Jewish Cemetery in London

On 9th May 2003, it was discovered that 386 graves had been desecrated at the Plashet Jewish Cemetery in East London. Most of the gravestones were thrown around or turned on their side, and the cemetery itself suffered serious damage. These acts of vandalism had apparently been perpetrated on the night between 6th and 7th May. The Plashet Cemetery is no longer active. This was an act of desecration unprecedented in Britain. The police investigation of the conditions of the incident is still in progress. According to press reports, London police have arrested three youths in Newham (neighborhood near the cemetery) on suspicion of involvement in the incident.
