Sweden – Harassment of a Jewish Youth in Gothenburg

In three separate incidents various youths attacked a 13-year-old Jewish youth in Gothenburg:

On 23rd August, the youth was attacked by other youths as he was on his way back from morning prayers in the synagogue. The stalked him and shouted epithets at him including: “It’s a shame that Hitler didn’t finish the job”. At one point they got closer to the youth blocking his way, and one of them punched him in the chest. The Jewish youth resisted his attacker, punching him in the face and driving off the others.

On 10th September, the same Jewish youth was playing chess at a chess club in the town when three youths threatened him that they would finish the work which, to their disappointment, Hitler had not. The chess instructor suggested that the Jewish youth transfer to another club if he felt uncomfortable in that one.

On 16th September, the same Jewish youth was riding the tram on his way to school. He was wearing a Star of David. A youth, about 15 years old, shouted “Dirty Jew”! at him, ordering him to bow down before him. The Jewish youth refused, and when the tram stopped and he tried to get off, the other youth shoved him hard and he fell onto the street. Fortunately he suffered no injuries. Despite the fact that there were others on the tram, no one tried to intervene.
