On 9th October 2003, the cemetery in Ioànnina was once again desecrated. The Greek Foreign Ministry Spokesman denounced the act saying: “We denounced acts of vandalism by some unknown persons against a monument to the victims of the Holocaust in Ioànnina in the town’s Jewish cemetery. From any point of view, this was a barbaric act of disrespect. In any event, this was a single and marginal act that did not represent the feelings of the Greek people towards the Jewish citizens of Greece. Historically, Greece and the Greeks have stood in solidarity with the Jewish, community and no single act can besmirch this active solidarity and aid”.
