Britain – First Prize Awarded to a Caricature Against the Israeli Prime Minister

The British Political Caricatures Institute granted First Prize to a caricature which had appeared in the Independent in January 2003. In the caricature, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is portrayed as naked and eating a baby. The background shows a bombed-out town. The caption reads “What’s the matter? Haven’t you every seen a politician kissing children before”? “Vote Sharon! Vote Likud”! Already with the publication of the caricature, reminiscent of the Nazi stereotype of the bloodthirsty Jew, the Israeli Embassy in London issued a complaint to the British Journalism Council. The Council determined that the caricature was legitimate.
