Turkey – Convictions in an Antisemitism Trial

Nurullah Kuncak, the 17-year-old son of one of the perpetrators of the attacks on the synagogues in November 2003, and three Turkish journalists were convicted of antisemitism and could face up to three years in jail. The youth said in an interview to Milliyet Daily: “The attacks did not touch the hearts of the members of my family because the target was Jews. We couldn’t be happy, but we were satisfied. If Muslims hadn’t been killed we would have been happy. We don’t like Jews”. The journalist and the editors of the newspaper were convicted of providing a platform for incitement against members of another religion. This is the first time in Turkish history that citizens have been convicted of antisemitic activities.
