Belgium – Antisemitic Curses Shouted at a Soccer Match in Brussels

On 31st October 2004, in the course of a soccer match between teams of 14 to 16 year-old high school students, in this case between the local Maccabi Team and FC Haren, most of whose players are of Turkish origin, the latter began shouting antisemitic curses. Because of that, the referee decided to stop the game in order to warn them that if they continued their shouting he would stop the game altogether. After the game, the FC Haren players began singing “Heil Hitler”. The entire incident was recorded by the referee, but the team leader refused to sign confirming the details. In the wake of the incident complaints were registered with the police and with the Soccer Federation. The FC Haren team decided to punish the players. The Belgian Soccer Union decided to suspend the team for the rest of the season and fined it 250 euros. In addition, the Brussels Municipality decided to suspend the subsidies given to the FC Haren and revoked its permit to play in municipal soccer matches
