Chile – Member of Parliament Denounced for Antisemitic Remarks

On 14th July 2004, Member of Parliament Osvaldo Palma of the Renovacion Nacional Party strongly criticized Member of Parliament Eugenio Tuma of the Partido por la Democracia Party for having antisemitic overtones in his criticism of Israel‘s policies in a speech the latter had made on 20th May 2004. Among other things, Palma said: “Let us not deny that anti-Israel remarks today parallel the old antisemitism. Today, it is not academic to attack the Jewish People so [they] attack the State of Israel. In the final analysis this is two sides of the same coin. When the right of the State of Israel to exist is attacked, (in essence) it is the Jewish People that is attacked”.
