Britain – Opposition to the Academic Boycott

At least three universities in Britain are opposed to the academic boycott initiated in April by the Association of University Teachers (AUT) against Haifa and Bar-Ilan Universities. Representatives of the AUT at Warwick, Cambridge and Oxford Universities are planning to oppose the boycott at a special meeting of the AUT Council at which the boycott is to be discussed again. The boycott proposal aroused opposition in Britain, the United States and Israel. The American Association of University Professors, representing about 45,000 lecturers at colleges and universities all over the United States published a decision according to which the AUT’s boycott impinges on academic freedom and called for its retraction. The Academy of Sciences in New York, an institution for the promotion of science also denounced the decision.
