Belarus – Antisemitic Reactions to the Opening of a Kosher Bakery in Mogilev

The opening of a kosher bakery in Mogilev gave rise to a series of antisemitic reactions. For example, the daily Mogilev Register warned the Orthodox Christians to stay away from “kosher products the same way one would stay away from ritual sacrifices” claiming that the blood from the sacrificial animals is used in kosher rituals. The paper also accused the manager of the baker of turning the town into a Jewish community just so he could make money. Another paper, the Evening Mogilev, claimed that making something kosher is “sacrilegious and anti-Christian”.
