Austria – The Prosecution Demands a More Severe Punishment for Holocaust Denier David Irving

On 21st February 2006, the Austrian General Prosecutor appealed the three-year sentence meted out to convicted British Holocaust denier David Irving. The General Prosecution Spokesman said that the Prosecution would request that
Irving be given a stiffer sentence, because

Irving
‘s expressions of regret and admission of his mistake are merely skin-deep and are designed to avoid the maximum sentence. The Spokesman said that the Prosecution had not specified what punishment it wanted and would leave the decision up to the Austrian Supreme Court. Holocaust denial is a criminal offense in

Austria
carrying a ten-year prison term.
