Belgium – Conviction of the Directors of an Antisemitic Website

On 21^st June 2006, a court in

Brussels convicted Abdel Rahman Ayachi and Raphael Gendron of running an antisemitic website. The site,
www.assabyle.com

, is owned by the Islamic Center in

Belgium and was accused of antisemitism, denial of the Holocaust and incitement to xenophobia. The judge said that the site contained incitement to racism and hatred of the Israeli People and the Jews adding that freedom of expression has boundaries. He sentenced the two men to 10 months in prison, five suspended, and a fine of 15,000 euros each. This is the first conviction of its kind in
