Argentina – Eleven Thousand Dollars in Compensation to a Jewish Couple Refused Rental of a Flat in Buenos Aires

On 26th October 2006, a judge in an appeals court determined that a resident of Buenos Aires had to pay 35 thousand pesos ($11 thousand) to a Jews couple in compensation for mental distress after she had refused to rent her flat to them because of their religion. In 2001, the woman, an attorney by profession, agreed to rent a flat she owned to the couple but then changed her mind when she discovered that the couple’s name had a Jewish ring to it. She explained to them that she had absolutely no intention of renting the flat to Jews, Chinese or homosexuals. She went on to explain to the astonished couple that people of Korean origin would not be allowed to live in a property she owned, either.
