Egypt– “Mein Kampf” but not “Zorba the Greek” on Sale at the Egyptian Book Fair

The antisemitic and reactionary side of the Egyptian censorship has become clear through the “controversial” books it has excluded from the Egyptian Book Fair. While it has excluded such books as “Zorba the Greek”, “The Da Vinci Code” and books by the Czech author Milan Kundera, Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf” is on sale in numerous translations and editions. The book is one of the fair’s best sellers. Only the Koran has outsold it.

The most important and largest of the book fairs in the Arab world is held in Cairo. Two million of the Egyptian Capital’s residents have flocked to the fair and perused the 1,400 titles on display. Mahmud Abdallah, the Director of the “Dar al-Kutab al-Arabi” Egyptian-Syrian publishing company, declared with satisfaction that Hitler’s popular book has been sold mainly to young people between the ages of 18-25. Second in popularity are countless numbers religious books which were grabbed up at reduced prices.
