Steve Cohen, a congressman representing a mostly black district in Memphis, is no stranger to political attacks tinged with race.
But a political flier has surfaced this week aiming to rally black Christians to oppose Cohen in his re-election bid because he’s Jewish.
The flier, a copy of which Cohen received in the mail, urges voters to unite behind “one black Christian to represent Memphis in the United States Congress in 2008.”
The flier also said Cohen and “the Jews hate Jesus.”
Cohen called the flier bizarre and his chief opponent in the Democratic primary said she was incensed by the anti-Semitic attack.
The flier included a contact name, “Rev. George Brooks,” and a phone number in Murfreesboro, a town near Nashville and some 200 miles outside Cohen’s district.
