2008 Antisemitism report in French-speaking Switzerland (Suisse Romande)

A strong augmentation of the number of events registered.

For five years in a row, the CICAD (the Inter-Community Coordination
Against Antisemitism and Defamation) has published its yearly report regarding
the situation of antisemitism in the Romand Switzerland (French-speakers).

As we mentioned in a release to the press announcing the publication of
the report for 2007: “Despite the decrease observed in the events that
took place in 2007, there is still a certain latent antisemitism amongst the
Swiss population. The expression of antisemitism changes according to the
events or to the news related to the national or the international politics.
The first elements linked to year 2007 call for some prudence.”

The sum-up table for the antisemitic events registered for 2008 in
Romand Switzerland shows a very high increase in the number of antisemitic
acts. With the overall number of 96 acts registered (against 38 in 2007), year
2008 has reached a “sad record” in comparison with the four previous
years covered by the study.

This concerning fact emphasizes the need for the raising of awareness in
view of a situation that is, to say the least, alarming.

The CICAD puts its faith on all
its partners, in order not to loosen its efforts to bring a decrease in the
number of antisemitic events.
