Russia – Man who put fake bomb in front of synagogue “gets slap on the wrist”

A resident of Omsk, who put a fake bomb in front of a synagogue

, was given a suspended sentence. The defendant made the fake bomb in his apartment on November 2 of last year,
and then called in a bomb threat

. He reportedly said that he was motivated by the proximity to the November 4 holiday, a day that has been expropriated by far-right nationalists and often features antisemitic and racist demonstrations and acts of violence.

Despite this, he does not face hate crime charges, but was instead convicted of “a deliberately false alarm about an act of terrorism.”
