Greece – Three arrested for Nazi slogans at Greek Jewish cemetery

Police arrested three Greek neo-Nazi activists on suspicion of writing Nazi slogans on the walls of a Jewish cemetery in Greece’s second city Salonika, a police official said.

The trio, including a 17-year-old minor, are also suspected of having set gasoline alight on tombs in the cemetery, the official said. They were to appear later before a prosecutor.

Swastikas and antisemitic graffiti reading “Fire to the Jews” and “Juden raus” appeared on a number of tombstones, the alleys and the surrounding wall of the cemetery.

The Greek government on Saturday issued a stern condemnation.

“The government unequivocally condemns the vandalisms at the Jewish cemetery of Thessaloniki. Such instances of racism and hate have no place whatever in Greek society, which stands opposed to such acts of violence and chauvinism. The responsible authorities will do whatever is necessary so that the perpetrators of these acts are led, as soon as possible, before justice,” government spokesman George Petalotis said.
