A synagogue at the West Clarkstown Jewish Center that was undergoing repairs after it was destroyed by fire a year ago was vandalized by someone who broke in overnight and damaged the sanctuary.
It appeared that the vandals got in through a window. Because of ongoing repair work, there is construction material in the building.
Whoever broke into the building took joint compound, a substance similar to plaster, and spread it on the windows and walls.
Pieces of Jerusalem stone, a type of limestone common in Israel, that the congregation had hoped to use to decorate the ark holding the Torah, were glued to the walls as well.
A vandal also defecated on the synagogue floor.
