Belgium – Attack against Jews in Anvers

Around 18:00, a white man of Polish origin, who was drunk, attacked a rabbi that was passing by. The event occurred at Belgielei, next to the Red Cross building. He stole his hat and attempted to beat him.

Several members of the CKJGA (the coordinating committee of the Antwerp Jewish communities) saw the man escaping, caught him and placed him to the ground.

The man refused to return the hat, became more violent and called out antisemitic slander.

The CKJGA alerted the police. Since he was drunk he was unable to escape. Upon arrival of the police, the man was still at the place. The police examined the situation and arrested him.

Three members of the arrestee, also of Polish origin, who had arrived at the place in the meanwhile, also became more violent.

A member of the CKJGA alerted the police again. The police returned to the scene and arrested a second person. The two others had left the place in the meanwhile.

Jews who were present at the place found the torn hat of the rabbi that had been attacked.
