Weimar – Unknown people have smeared a plaster-like mass on three stumbling blocks in memory of Weimar Jews persecuted under National Socialism. The crime became known on Friday morning following a tip from the public. During the immediately following inspection of the crime scene on Schillerstrasse, it was found that the stones had already been cleaned.
“I am very pleased that the sensitivity and commitment among the population is so high that such acts are not visible in the cityscape for long. The fact remains: we will never tolerate the desecration of stumbling blocks. The anti-Semitism that is expressed in such acts must be countered decisively. Jewish life – whether in the past or in the future – is and remains part of the city of Weimar. I very much hope that the police investigation will be successful,” said Mayor Peter Kleine.
The EKSW was immediately commissioned to remove the remaining contamination. The police are checking the remaining stumbling blocks in the city to ensure they are intact.
