Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve – Antisemitic and racist flyers, promoting a Nazi and supremacist ideology” were distributed on Friday in mailboxes on the UCLouvain campus in Louvain-la-Neuve, the Union of Jewish Students of Belgium (UEJB) denounced on Sunday.
The organization filed a complaint and became a civil party, indicates Gad Deshayes, co-president of the UEJB.
“Faced with a constant increase in antisemitism and racism in Belgium, the UEJB urges administrative and academic authorities to take the necessary measures to guarantee the security of minorities on Belgian university campuses,” argues the student union in a press release also signed by the student organizations AGL (UCLouvain), BEA (ULB), CAU (Saint-Louis), ORE (UMons), the Federation of French-speaking students (Fef), the CEDI of the Institute of Arts broadcasting (IAD) and the Muslim Youth Federation (FJM).
The coming together of all these organizations is “a strong reaction from all students and all campuses (…) against hatred”, judges Gad Deshayes.
In a reaction addressed to the Belga agency, UCLouvain said it “condemns all forms of racism or antisemitism on its campuses”. The university is “inquiring into the facts mentioned,” specifies a spokesperson.
According to Ecolo federal deputy Simon Moutquin, the mayor of Ottiginies-Louvain-la-Neuve Julie Chantry will ask the police for an investigation, he writes on the social network X (formerly Twitter). He also indicates that he will submit a question to the Minister of the Interior, Annelies Verlinden.
