Raleigh, N.C. – Raleigh police and the FBI are investigating after a local Jewish synagogue received an unspecified threat over the weekend, prompting religious officials to cancel some weekend activities, authorities said Monday.

Officials at Temple Beth Or said they canceled the synagogue’s Sunday school and a party to mark the end of summer as a precaution after synagogue workers and board members received letters, which contained a “specific threat,” Saturday evening.

Officials at the temple, which is located in the 5300 block of Creedmoor Road, declined to say how many letters were received, but the executive director said it was more than a handful.

Synagogue officials also declined to identify the words used in the letters, but the executive director said they contained “hateful rhetoric.”

Members of the congregation received an email at their homes late Saturday alerting them to the issue.

Synagogue officials said they are on the lookout in case they receive any additional letters.
