Desecration of mass graves in Ukraine
Nemirov – On the eve of Holocaust Remembrance Day, the local police arrested suspects who dug the mass graves of the Jews of the town of Nemirov who were murdered in the Holocaust, in order to rob precious items they hoped to find among the bones.
The police reports that the suspects, aged 50 and 52, packed the bones in garbage bags. This is not the first time that there have been attempts to plunder the graves of Jewish victims: Ukrainians believe that before the Jews were murdered in the Holocaust, they swallowed gold jewelry. This is the reason they occasionally try to dig the mass graves in order to find “Jewish gold.”
In previous incidents, the excavators separated the bones and the gold teeth and the jewels that had been removed from the skulls. But this time they packed the bones in garbage bags and left an open pit – a mass grave with a monument commemorating the terrible massacre committed by the Nazis against the Jews of the city and Jews from Bukovina and Bessarabia between 1941-1944.
