Montreal - Police are seeking two suspects believed to have been wearing hoodies after the high-end Chops Resto Bar steak-and-sushi restaurant in the Snowdon district was firebombed about 4 a.m. Thursday.
“The two suspects fled the scene” at 5322 Queen Mary Rd. near Décarie Blvd., Constable Daniel Lacoursière of Montreal police added, citing witnesses.
An “incendiary object” — apparently a Molotov cocktail — was thrown through an expansive front window.
The resulting blaze was brief, Lacoursière added, extinguished after the sprinkler system kicked in.
Water damage was extensive, he suggested.
Further details were not immediately available, other than the description provided on the eating spot’s website.
The restaurant promotes itself as “Montreal’s finest Asian fusion steak house & sushi bar, where only premium kosher ingredients are used.”
Quebec’s business registry lists the restaurant’s shareholders as Nathalie Chayon and Yael Amsellem, and the president as Isaac Nahon, all of Côte Saint Luc.
Early Wednesday, two bars in the Plateau borough were similarly firebombed, shortly after 6 a.m.
Héloïse Meunier, a spokesperson for the Montreal fire department, pegged the first call for aid in the Snowdon firebombing at 4:02 a.m., adding that it drew seven vehicles and about 15 firefighters.
After calling in the police arson squad, firefighters declared their participation finished at 5:46 a.m.
The department did not have a firm damages estimate, Meunier said.
