Winnipeg - Winnipeg police are investigating after ‘disgusting’ antisemitic posters were put up around downtown Winnipeg Friday evening, targeting Mayor Sam Katz and other members of the local community.
“I was shocked and disgusted to learn of the antisemitic posters that were put up throughout downtown Winnipeg late last night,” said Vic Toews, MP for the riding of Provencher, in a statement on his website Saturday.
“It is extremely disheartening to see this type of conduct take place in Canada, especially on the eve of Rosh Hashanah and the Jewish New Year.”
The posters, with the title “$hitler’s List” name several members of the Jewish community, including Winnipeg’s mayor, members of the Asper and Shindleman families and other prominent business people. The poster refers to the recent fire hall land swap controversy and calls the group named a “cabal of cockroaches,” promising jail time for all.
Mayor Katz issued the following statement: “I am extremely saddened and disheartened that an individual, or group of individuals, is posting such material. I have faith that the people of Winnipeg will not support such malice.”
Winnipeg police said Saturday no one has claimed responsibility for the posters, and the posters are not signed. The Major Crimes Unit is investigating.
Police said the posters were taken down Saturday although it was possible some remained.
