Swastikas spray-painted on a monument

Dnepropetrovsk – the monument commemorating about four thousand local people shot to death during World War II, which was inaugurated on May 22nd of this year at the exit from the city of Novomoskovsk, was defaced by unknown persons during the night between June 30th and July 1st. Unknown persons drew with red paint four large swastikas on the granite monument.

As was reported by Sergei Reznik, member of the Central Committee in the Dnepropetrovsk district, the monument had been erected at the initiative of the Jewish community, which engaged in raising the funds necessary for its erection. On the monument the names and surnames of the people shot to death are engraved, and there are also Hebrew inscriptions. According to Reznik, as of now, the monument is covered with cloth and policemen are guarding nearby.

The Dnepropetrovsk Jewish community expressed its rage following the incident. “Let’s hope the culprits are discovered quickly by the police and receive the punishment they deserve, and that the monument is restored to its previous condition.” said Oleg Rostovtzev, the community’s spokesman.
